Over 100 prospective employees showed up at the job fair at the Library at Cedar Creek Lake. The fair was part of the Workforce Solutions of East Texas efforts to help local residents find employment.
Employers were on-hand to take applications, and answer questions about job opportunities. Some of the businesses present were Advanced Temporaries, Avon Products, Cedarview House, Check-n-Go, Christian Life Residential Services, Home Instead Senior Care, Lakeway Chiropractic, MUD Technology, TDCJ, TVCC, Volt Workforce Solution, West Place Nursing Home and Walmart Distribution.
Dewayne Weddell, a recruiter for Volt Workforce Solution, was at the event to take applications for job opportunities at Solar Turbine in Mabank and Desoto.
Volt Workforce Solution does most of the hiring for Solar Turbine. Weddell said, “The turn out has been good. We've talked to a number of prospective employees.”
Rick Smith, Business Service Manager for Workforce Solutions East Texas, said they try to have job fairs quarterly. The next fair will be Nov. 15 in Longview and Tyler.
The event in Longview is being touted as Hiring Red, White and Blue. The job fair is designed to connect Texas veterans with Texas employers who can benefit from veterans’ experience and discipline. The fair will be at 2430 S. High St. in Longview, and 4100 Troup Highway in Tyler.
The Workforce's Mobile Unit will be available on Nov. 19 in Seven Points at the Library at Cedar Creek Lake. The mobile unit can provide satellite Internet connection, WorkInTexas.Com and other job banks, resume building, labor market information and access to unemployment benefits.

Time to have a blast
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last about one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.
The fireworks show is directed and produced by Alpha-Lee Enterprises, Inc. of Liverpool, Texas. The show is a Keep Athens Beautiful event. -

Beetle infestation in county
If you’ve noticed some big black bugs gathering outside your home or crawling along the carpet, you’re just seeing evidence of the large number of ground beetles now in East Texas.
“The ground beetles are not rare, but the population of them that we’re seeing now is uncommon,” Henderson County AgriLife Extension Agent Rick Hirsch said. “This is the heaviest population of ground beetles that I’ve seen in my 20-plus years in Henderson County.” -
Former AISD coach, educator dies
Johnny Knott, who taught and coached in the Athens Independent School District for more than three decades, died Friday after a lengthy illness.
Knott, 75, began teaching in the Cayuga Public School System in 1963, before joining the AISD. He was also caretaker for Catfish Creek Ranch south of Athens, an avid gardener and fisherman. -
Vehicle glass broken
The Athens Police Department is investigating several windows that an Athens business reported broken out on vehicles parked at the location between closing time Wednesday and when employees arrived on Thursday.

Kids eat for free
After more than 20 years, Athens Independent School District is again giving away free breakfast and lunch.
It’s all part of the Summer Feeding Program, which began June 10 and will continue through July 18 from Monday through Thursday of every week only at Athens Intermediate School, 307 Madole St., Athens. -
It’s ‘The Next Big Thing’
Margaret Sinclair of Mabank might just be “The Next Big Thing.”
