Henderson County voters gave Republican Sheriff Ray Nutt another four years in office with an overwhelming win over Democratic challenger Bill Burton.
“I’m certainly honored that the people of Henderson County saw fit to re-elect me, and I’m really looking forward to getting back to the business of running the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office,” Nutt said.
Nutt, a longtime law officer who served as a Texas Ranger and investigator for the Henderson County District Attorney’s Office, first won the office in 2008.
Nutt received 20,941 votes to 6,126 for Burton. Early voters accounted for more than half of the sheriff’s total. They went for the incumbent, 11,040 to 2,721.
Nutt defeated Democrat Bill Casey by a 63-37 percent margin to become the first Republican to win the position. The sheriff announced for re-election in June, 2011. Then, after the long primary season, he won the Republican Primary in May without opposition.
In the General Election, Burton called for a change in the office, and cited his varied career as a real estate agent, Justice of the Peace and police officer in his campaign.
Nutt said throughout the campaign that he has been progressing toward the goals he set before taking office in January, 2009.
“The political part is not exactly my cup of tea,” Nutt said. “I enjoy running the sheriff’s office, and enjoy law enforcement.”
Nutt said he wouldn’t have won a second term without the hard work of the people under his command.
“I’d like to thank all of the people in the sheriff’s office for doing the job that basically got me re-elected,” Nutt said.

Time to have a blast
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last about one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.

Beetle infestation in county
If you’ve noticed some big black bugs gathering outside your home or crawling along the carpet, you’re just seeing evidence of the large number of ground beetles now in East Texas.
“The ground beetles are not rare, but the population of them that we’re seeing now is uncommon,” Henderson County AgriLife Extension Agent Rick Hirsch said. “This is the heaviest population of ground beetles that I’ve seen in my 20-plus years in Henderson County.” -
Former AISD coach, educator dies
Johnny Knott, who taught and coached in the Athens Independent School District for more than three decades, died Friday after a lengthy illness.
Knott, 75, began teaching in the Cayuga Public School System in 1963, before joining the AISD. He was also caretaker for Catfish Creek Ranch south of Athens, an avid gardener and fisherman. -

The Athens Police Department is investigating several windows that an Athens business reported broken out on vehicles parked at the location between closing time Wednesday and when employees arrived on Thursday.

After more than 20 years, Athens Independent School District is again giving away free breakfast and lunch.
It’s all part of the Summer Feeding Program, which began June 10 and will continue through July 18 from Monday through Thursday of every week only at Athens Intermediate School, 307 Madole St., Athens. -
