GUN BARREL CITY —
The Parrot Head Club of Cedar Creek Lake has broken ground on a handicapped-accessible fishing pier at Tom Finley Park.
The club has been working for three years to raise money for construction on the project. According to Parrot Head member Robert Render, the club has raised $50,000 through poker runs, chili cook-offs and other fund-raisers. Tom Finley Park was chosen so anglers could have access to the pier 24 hours a day. It will be located next to the boat ramp.
The Eddie Oehlers Wheelchair Accessible Fishing Pier on Cedar Creek Lake will be dedicated to military servicemen and servicewomen. According to Render, Eddie Oehlers was a longtime Parrot Head as well as a U.S. Navy veteran and a community activist who spent his life helping veterans, the disabled and those in need.
The project is expected to be completed by April. The Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Business After Hours on Tuesday, April 16, to celebrate the grand opening of the pier.
Dedication bricks can be purchased at the entrance of the pier. The bricks will be placed in honor or memory of friends, family, veterans or active duty military. The public can purchase bricks from the Parrot Head Club for $50. Forms for the bricks are available at Molly’s Catfish Corner in Seven Points; BnR Pit Grill in Mabank; Solar Screen in Gun Barrel City; and the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce office in Mabank.

Art hits the streets in Mabank
The Mabank Branch of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the fifth Mabank Festival and Art Show on Market Street in downtown Mabank this past weekend. Hundreds of people and more than 75 vendors attended the event. In addition to the artwork and other items for sale, there were food vendors and entertainment for children.
