ATHENS —
The Henderson County Food Pantry in Athens is looking for monetary donations from the community to help those who are in need of assistance.
Margaret Austin, secretary for the board of directors with the Henderson County Food Pantry, said they have had to quit handing out essential items such as toothpaste, soap, dishwasher detergent and cans of fruit.
“We can always use monetary donations since we can only continue with your support,” Austin said. “When asked if it is better to donate money or food, we have to say that money is best.”
The food pantry helps around 500 families every month, with its biggest month happening in May 2012, when it helped 656 families and 2,226 individuals. In November, the pantry helped 573 families and 1,948 individuals. In December, it helped 454 families and 1,544 individuals.
Austin said for the year, the food pantry was able to help 7,069 families and 17,417 individuals.
“We can usually get more for your money because of the businesses that are willing to give us discounts,” Austin said. “But we are thankful for any and all donations. There are no small gifts.”

You can also donate to the food pantry at 715 E. Corsicana Street between the hours of 8:30 to noon Monday through Friday.

Athens house burned
A Monday afternoon fire inflicted severe damage to a house at 911 W. Cayuga Dr. in Athens.
No one was injured in the blaze that started in the back bedroom of the residence. Athens Fire Chief John McQueary said the resident had been staying with her sister and was not at home at the time of the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation. -

Time to have a blast
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last about one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.
