The Athens Review
Andy Tanner, a Rockwall native and nephew of Athens resident and real estate agent Trish McGuffey, has signed a futures contract with the New Orleans Saints.
“He is very excited and he loves the Saints organization,” said McGuffey, who works for Steve Grant Real Estate. “They (the Saints) have used him on special teams and his dad, Steve Tanner, went to school here.”
Tanner was originally signed by the Saints back in 2010 as a rookie free agent.
He was a practice squad player but now has the chance to battle for a roster spot as a wide receiver.
On the Saints website, a futures contract is defined as one that a player signs for the upcoming season even though that season does not officially begin until the start of the league’s new year.
McGuffey said she has been able to watch him play in all of the preseason games during the past two years.
Tanner went to college at Division II Midwestern State University. He played in 38 games catching 120 passes for 1,716 yards and 20 touchdowns.
