Athens — A candlelight/prayer vigil will be held Saturday in Gun Barrel City for the victims, survivors and families of those affected by last week’s Connecticut school shooting.

The vigil will be held at 6 p.m. at the Gun Barrel City Pavilion located beside the Gun Barrel City police and fire departments.

A 20-year-old gunman burst into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last Friday and shot and killed 20 children and six adults before killing himself. The shooter’s mother was found murdered at another location.

Funerals for the victims began this week and will continue over the coming days. Police are still trying to determine a motive for the shootings.

All surrounding communities are invited to join the vigil, which will include a candle-lighting, prayers, songs and the recitation of poems.

A registry book will also be available for those in attendance to sign or in which to write prayers, words of encouragement or kinds words. The registry book will be sent to the City of Newtown.

Children are encouraged to bring notes, pictures and drawings that will be bundled with the registry book and sent, as well.

Donations for the families will also be accepted at the vigil, and can be dropped off at a designated table. Checks can be made out to: Sandy Hook School Support Fund, c/o Newtown Savings Bank, 39 Main Street, Newtown, CT., 06470. Checks will be processed through the United Way of Western Connecticut.
