At least one Malakoff youth appears to be a prime example of what FFA is about, and is a longtime veteran of stock show activities at the youthful age of 17.
Megan Dalrymple of Malakoff is a hard worker – so says her FFA Advisor, Kenneth Hancock. Both were at the Houston Livestock Show at the time of this interview showing her animal exhibits, destined to come back on Sunday, March 10. As it came out, Megan won third place in the brahma heifer show in the city.
“She‘s been involved in FFA for six years, and comes from an agricultural family,” Hancock said. “Her grandfather got her involved in showing Brahma cattle in Houston, San Antonio and Fort Worth.”
Hancock said that among her many duties and activities, she is the Malakoff Chapter Vice President of FFA. She also takes courses at Trinity Valley Community College, and works at Brookshire’s in Malakoff. She is also a member of the 4-H Club in Timber Trails in Malakoff.
“She’s just a really sweet youth lady, and has a very high work ethic,” Hancock said.
Hancock said she is destined to have pigs, market hogs, country broilers, and a registered Brahma heifer in the Henderson County Livestock Show.
Megan is the daughter of Jason Dalrymple, a Dallas firefighter and Leslie Carter, a Certified Nursing Assistant from Malakoff. She is the stepdaughter of Kristi Dalrymple, a teacher at Tool Elementary.
“I’m interested in livestock. Since we began these 4H, I’ve shown everything – cattle, lambs, goals, pigs, rabbits and chickens in stock shows.”
Her stock show resume includes those in Fort Worth, the East Texas State Fair, San Antonio, Houston, Henderson County and Junior Brahma’s State Shows.
She has shown a Brahma heifer, a pig and chickens. She showed a heifer in San Antonio on Feb. 8 and in Fort Worth on Jan. 22. She was not victorious in either show. But, even in these, there was another type of victory.
“To not win didn’t bother me,” she said. “I know kids that worked as hard as I do, or harder. The experience itself is a great thing to happen.”
After she finishes at TVCC, she has been selected to continue her studies at Texas A&M University, where she will major in biomedical science.
Some of Megan’s siblings are also in FFA, and has shown animals, placing in past contests. They are Kimleigh Anding, 19; Allie Dalrymple, 14; Kyler Anding, 11; and Paige Dalrymple, 10.
Siblings not yet in FFA are Cash Carter, 6, and Erin Carter, 8.

Wet and wild
A line of severe thunderstorms roared throughout Henderson County on Tuesday afternoon, dropping significant rainfall and taking down trees and power lines.
The storm produced heavy rains in Athens, where the National Weather Service reports 2.16 inches fell. Residents in the county were seeing three or more inches in their rain gauges. -
Strong message
A Henderson County jury delivered a strong message to a 37-year-old Kemp man in the sentencing phase of a child sexual-abuse trial on Tuesday.
The jury, in Judge Mark Calhoon’s 3rd District Court, handed Danny Ray Lusk four life sentences and one 20-year sentence, the maximum jail time on each count. -
Going to ‘WAR’
A program termed “We Are Responsible” was generated this year at South Athens Elementary School by its principal, Eugene Buford.
At first reading, the slogan appears to be for the school’s students. But, after looking at the slogan and noting that the abbreviation is WAR, Buford says the slogan is for educators. -
A need that’s very easy to see
The Greater Athens Lions Club is asking for used eyeglasses, lenses, glass cases and hearing aids for the annual Lions Club White Cane Day this Saturday.

The 50th annual Henderson County Farm and Ranch Tour concluded Tuesday with a luncheon on the floor of the Henderson County Fair Park Complex arena and the naming presentation of the Joe B. Fulgham Agriculturist of the Year.
The 25th recipient of the award was Jody Jackson of Murchison, whose farming and ranching operations started with a few cattle and some chickens then grew to one of the county’s most varied operations. -
County votes to sell old annex building
Henderson County officials on Tuesday narrowly approved contracting with an Athens realtor to list the old Courthouse Annex building for sale.
Steve Grant Real Estate was chosen to sell the property by a 3-to-2 vote. Precinct 3 Commissioner Ronny Lawrence and Precinct 4 Commissioner Ken Geeslin cast the dissenting votes. -
