Grow your own vegetables through square foot gardening

The Athens Review

Athens — On Saturday, March 16, Pat Kriener, a Certified Square Foot Gardening Teacher, will present a free workshop at the East Texas Arboretum in Athens.

The program, hosted by the Henderson County Master Gardeners, will focus on growing vegetables using the square foot gardening method.

Square foot gardening is a simple system that allows gardeners to economically grow healthy food in a fraction of the space required for conventional row crops.  By using raised beds, individuals with physical limitations can also participate in vegetable gardening.

This fun and productive method has numerous advantages that can be adapted to a variety of garden situations.  It can be especially useful in small yards, or areas with extremely poor soil, and is also great for beginners.

Kriener will demonstrate square foot gardening methodology by constructing an inexpensive raised bed on site. Choosing soils, sprouting seeds on paper towels, selecting and spacing plants will also be discussed.

The best part of square foot gardening is the self-satisfaction an individual receives from growing their own food.  Home-grown food can be harvested at the peak of ripeness.  Ripe food looks better, tastes better and is frequently more nutritious.

Kriener enjoys all kinds of gardening at her 2-acre mini farm, Wildwood Cottage, located in Johnson County.  She is a Master Gardener, Master Naturalist, Master Composter, horticulture therapist and Certified Herbalist.  She teaches classes related to these specialties.

To learn more about square foot gardening, please join the Henderson County Master Gardeners for a morning of fun and learning.   Master Gardeners will be on-hand to answer questions on topics such as preferred vegetables for East Texas, soil sampling, worm composting, herb growing and beekeeping.

The free event will be held at East Texas Arboretum located at 1601 Patterson Road, Athens.  Doors open on Saturday, March 16 at 8:30 a.m., with the speaker beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Light refreshments will be served, and there will be a drawing for door prizes.
