Unemployment rate bounces down

Athens — The Henderson County unemployment rate bounced down in February after  a spike in January, according to figures released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission.

Henderson County had an umepmployment rate in February of 7.1 percent, down from 7.7 percent a month before. The rate had increased a full percentage point between December and January.

The TWC reports that Texas’ seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in February, up slightly from 6.3 percent in January, but down from 7.1 percent a year ago.

The state’s unemployment rate also remained below the national unemployment rate of 7.7 percent, marking the 74th consecutive month that the Texas unemployment rate has been below the national rate.

The Henderson County workforce decreased slighty in February from 35,393 to 35,236. The number employed saw a gain of 48 workers to 32,719. The improved unemployment rate was facilitated by a decrease in unemployed workers from 2,722 to 2,517.

“It’s good to see so many industries expanding in Texas,”  TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton said. “Our state’s construction industry and mining and logging industry have both grown by 7.5 percent over the last year, combining for 63,000 jobs added. Such strong growth in these industries helps to drive growth in other industries.”

TWC Commissioner representing Employers Hope Andrade said the private sector has added more than 347,000 jobs over the year, and is growing at an annual rate of almost four percent.

“As these businesses continue to grow their investments, I am committed to ensuring that our state can continue to meet their workforce needs,” Andrade said.

The following is a list of Henderson County’s neighboring counties, followed by the February unemployement rate and the January rate.

 • Anderson - 7.3, 8.0

 • Ellis - 6.5, 7.0

 • Henderson - 7.1, 7.7
