The Athens Review
The Athens Kiwanis Club awarded scholarships to some of the brightest Henderson County high school seniors at its meeting on Tuesday.
The 2013 recipients were invited, along with their families, to the Athens Country Club for the annual ceremony.
Mary P. Nicholson, Trinity Valley Community College Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Kiwanis club secretary, presided over the presentations.
“The stories, the essays are wonderful, so thank you kids for applying,” Nicholson said.
The following is a list of the 2013 Kiwanis scholarship winners:
• Athens – Nelly Pedroza, Haley Pursley;
• Cross Roads — MaKayla Arnold, Heather Williams;
• Eustace — Gavin Kirkhart;
• LaPoynor — Cassie Tobin, Tiffany Wimberly;
• Malakoff — Sonia P. Gonzales.
The Athens Achievers presented scholarships to two Athens seniors. The awards went to Gabreila De La Garza and Elmer Pinedo.
Each of the recipients is a graduating senior who will attend TVCC in the fall of 2013. A selection committee studies the student’s qualifications, and picks the winners. Each applicant submits a letter of recommendation from an adult.
Nicholson said she was impressed by the quality of this year’s recipients. She said the selection committee of Teri Kirksey, Kari Wilmeth, Tony Kalawe, Bobbie Hawkins, Adam Davis and Tilo Galvan had a tough job.
“That’s a very difficult process, because the applications are just really good,” Nicholson said.
TVCC President Glendon Forgey praised the club for the scholarship program.
“A lot of times, community colleges are considered transfer institutions,” Forgey said. “In my commencement remarks, I made the comment that we are not a transfer institution. We are a transforming institution.”
Forgey said the Kiwanis Club, in giving scholarships to top students, helps transfer young lives and prepare a better citizen for the future.
“Everyone here that takes part in this can take pride in what you’re doing to help these students,” Forgey said.
The scholarships were based on funds raised by the Kiwanis, and matched by TVCC.
