Athens Christian Preparatory Academy efforts to find a home of its own took a step forward this week when the city council approved a site plan for a property on east U.S. Highway 175.
The council also voted to change the zoning on the agricultural property to add a specific-use provision that will allow the school to operate there. The 48-acre piece of land owned by Deborah Walker sits at the intersection of U.S. 175 and Loop 7. There are several existing buildings that the school plans to renovate for its purposes. While the renovation is underway, the school plans to use portable buildings for classrooms.
“This is a quite large development, so in the interim, what they are going to do is to add seven to 10 portable buildings in this area to get the school up and running,” Athens Director of Planning and Development Greg Crecelius said. “As the funds become available, they will go ahead and build their permanent structures.”
The Academy has been raising money for the move since announcing it had entered a contract on the property in early 2012. On April 21, 2012, ACPA announced a capital campaign to jump-start the renovation and building plans. Teresa DeMay is headmaster of the non-denominational Christian school.
“Because of the way things are structured, we are eligible for grant money,” DeMay said. “We have already identified several funders that we will go after for money, and that should move things along, but you can’t get any of that money until you’re actually on the property.”
ACPA began classes in the fall of 2008. Since then, its students have won numerous awards in academics and extra-curricular activities. ACPA now offers a fully-accredited 7th- through 12th-grade program. The school has been housed by different churches that were willing to help it get started.
