The only champion

Mabank junior takes all dairy heifer awards Wednesday

Athens — Cassiddy Petty, a 17-year-old Mabank High School junior, took all awards at the Henderson County Livestock Show Wednesday night in the Dairy Heifer category.

He had four cattle that scored big, including honors for the Grand Champion Dairy Heifer, Reserve Champion Dairy Heifer, Showmanship Grand Prize and Reserve Grand Prize for Showmanship.  He also won the first place heifer in Class 1, and third in Grand Drive.

For Petty, who is President of Chandler 4-H, the enjoyment is his only motive in entering.

“It’s all about having fun.  If I had more competition here, I’d still be having fun.”

Petty lives on a ranch near Mabank, and started his ventures in livestock shows in the seventh grade. He won contests over the entire state, including Top Showman in 2012 for the Texas Jersey Cattle Club in Fort Worth.

Cassiddy’s mother, Monnette Petty, said they live on five acres and have 18 head of cattle. Cassiddy also raises back angus cattle, and one day wants to open a dairy.

“He has won several scholarships, and wants to go to Texas A&M, and get into ROTC,” she said.  “Then he wants to get into the Navy.  He is the youngest of five children, who are in the military.  When he retires, he wants to have a dairy.”
