AIS wins district championship


The Athens Review

Athens — Students from Athens Intermediate School competed on Dec. 3 and Dec. 5 against seven schools in district University Interscholastic League competitions.

AIS competed against schools from Brownsboro, Chandler, Mabank, Mineola, and Wills Point.

Athens Intermediate won first place overall in both fourth and fifth grade, making it the district champion.

Team members and results for each event are as follows:

Fourth Grade Art Smart – Coached by Sheila Brown and Amy Wood. Team members are Kelsie Carrizales, Abraham Garcia, Zsaid Inestroza and Christian Ornelas.

Fifth Grade Art Smart – Coached by Sheila Brown and Amy Wood.  The third place team was Makiyah McCollister, Gabrielle Nichols – Tie for 2nd Place Individual, Bre’naysia Eldridge, Drew Horn, Miguel Martinez, Alexa Wilcoxson.

In fourth and fifth Grade Chess – coached by Suzy Foster ­– Madison Wilson placed fifth and Flor Lopez was sixth. Audrey Pedroza, Hunter Rasco and Kaitlyn Wilson were participants.

Fifth Grade Dictionary Skills – coached by Leah Rayburn – McKenzie Hair took first place while Connor Kale was second. Emely Gallegos and Camryn Pair were participants.

In Fifth Grade Listening Skills – coached by Kim Clopton – Savanna Anderson placed third while Derek Killingsworth was fourth. Guillermo Mingus and Madison Westover were participants.

In Fifth Grade Maps, Graphs, and Charts – coached by Karen Lynch – Jorge Garcia took third while Heidi Holyfield and John Rodriguez tied for sixth place. Anthony Ariciaga was a participant.

In Fourth Grade Music Memory – coached by Kim Storey – Skyler Cerrillo, Valeria Chavez, Josie Godwin, Madelyn Rummel, Natori Williams finished second as a team.

In Fifth Grade Music Memory – coached by Martha Healey – AIS took first place as a team.

Individual performances include KiShari Friendly first place, Dorian Perry second, Anna Howard fourth, Nora Majors fifth and Alexis Robles sixth. CaLeighia Anderson was a participant.

In Fourth Grade Number Sense – coached by Alejandro Guzman and Sandy Howard – Caden Earley took first place, Oscar Hernandez second, Sonia Cerrillo third. Valeria Soto was a participant.

In Fifth Grade Number Sense – coached by Alejandro Guzman and Sandy Howard – Angel Garcia was first, Will Matthews second, River Perkins third and Sarah Campa fourth.

In Fourth Grade Oral Reading – coached by Domenece Harlan – Emily Mahmoud  took first place, Aaliyah Braxton second, while Brendie Brimer and Mya Ray were participants.

In Fifth Grade Oral Reading – coached by Dionne Johnston – Kyra Dawson was fifth, Emily Mason sixth. Connor Clay, Hailee Reeves were participants.

In Fourth Grade Ready Writing – coached by Christi Lee – Calista Robinson was fifth while Caroline Moore, Tushar Patel and Kaitlyn Prewitt were participants.

In Fifth Grade Ready Writing – coached by Beth Fehlbaum – Ericka Ibarra, Aspen Odom and Geraldine Sanchez were participants.

In Fifth Grade Social Studies – coached by Moises Sanchez – Garrison Nichols took first place, Lauren Pickle second, Angela Flores fourth and Litsy De Luna was a participant.

In Fourth Grade Spelling – coached by Amelia Hernandez – Tanner Jones took sixth while Cesar Martinez, Reyna Rodriguez and Daniela Torres were participants.

In Fifth Grade Spelling – coached by Vassandral Trimble – Edmon Montealegre took first place while Jaylen Davis was fifth. Roudy Epps and Cedric Lowe were participants.
