Athens —
The mandatory wait is over, and the Athens Independent School District Board of Trustees has named Blake Stiles as the new AISD superintendent. The action came in a special session of the board Thursday night.
Stiles was chosen lone finalist for the position Nov. 15, stepping up from the Assistant Superintendent post. State law requires that a school district wait 21 days from the selection of the lone finalist, before it can vote to make the hire official.
At the meeting Thursday, the trustees convened in executive session to discuss the hire, then returned to deliver the news. A motion was made by Alicea Elliott, and seconded by David Freeman that Stiles be employed as Superintendent of Schools for Athens ISD. The motion was passed by a unanimous vote.
The AISD top spot became open when Dr. Robert Steeber announced in October that he was stepping down as Athens Superintendent to move to the Education Service Center for Region XI office in Fort Worth. The trustees accepted Steeber’s resignation, and named Stiles interim superintendent to serve while the district searched for a permanent replacement. Once Stiles stepped into the office, support for him to remain there began to grow around the district.
Stiles came to AISD as assistant superintendent in October, 2011, shortly after Steeber moved into the superintendent’s role. He has been in education since 1998, and was one of six finalists for superintendent of the Muenster ISD in 2010.
Stiles served as principal of Howe High School for six years. During that stay, the Howe High School campus earned a Texas Education Agency exemplary rating in the 2009-2010 school year.

A jury returned a guilty verdict on Tuesday against 36 year-old Danny Ray Lusk for sexual misconduct involving two children.
Henderson County District Attorney Scott McKee said the punishment phase of the trial which began May 14 was set to begin Tuesday in Judge Mark Calhoon’s 3rd District Court. -

Art hits the streets in Mabank
The Mabank Branch of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the fifth Mabank Festival and Art Show on Market Street in downtown Mabank this past weekend. Hundreds of people and more than 75 vendors attended the event. In addition to the artwork and other items for sale, there were food vendors and entertainment for children.
