Athens Mayor Randy Daniel is the choice of the Henderson County Commissioners Court to fill the unexpired Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace term.
After looking at the 16 applications submitted, and a series of interviews, the court liked Daniel’s resume.
“The court felt that given the circumstances, Randy was the one for the position,” Precinct 1 Commissioner Wade McKinney said.
Daniel will serve the remainder of the term left by Henry Ashford.
Ashford died of a heart attack Oct. 20, leaving a vacancy in the office he had held since 2002. His term was set to end Dec. 31, 2013.
The county accepted applications for a 2-week period, then scheduled a lengthy round of interviews for Nov. 15.
On Tuesday, Commissioners met again to finalize the decision.
Daniel, 62, is a life-long resident of the area. He was sworn in for a fourth term at city hall in May after winning re-election. In a tough race, Daniel defeated Joe Whatley by on 1vote margin. The final total 627 to 609.
Previously, Daniel made an unsuccessful bid for Henderson County Judge in 2002 in a race won by David Holstein. He also served several terms as County Democratic Party Chairman.

A future investment
Harry and Patti Hogue present a check for $500 to go toward the Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park in Athens. The fund-raising effort is nearing the finish line for the $220,000 project, although donations are still being sought. The Splash Pad is expected to be open some time this summer.

To make the day complete, the Athens Municipal Airport will be hosting a “Fly-in” on Saturday, June 1. According to organizer Charles Tidmore, the event will give the local community a better awareness and appreciation of the Athens Airport. -
