In the executive session of the Athens Independent School District meeting of the board of trustees Thursday, a board member tendered his resignation, and an appointment was made to that position.
Board member Raymond Williams will be replaced by Eric Smith, a former member of the AISD Board of Trustees. At press time, no reasons were given for the resignation.
AISD Chief Financial Officer Randy Jones said that Williams will be missed.
“He’s been there for some time, I think about seven years,” Jones said. “He’s certainly been a valued member of the board, and he will be missed. Eric Smith is another outstanding individual, and has board experience as well.”
Other resignations announced were teachers Lynda Taylor, Edith Owens, William Cowley, Caroline Maxvill, Nicole Yeakley, Scott Williams, Deidre Sanchez, Laurie Bass, Lee Moore, Becky Norton, Emily Wilken, Amanda Blanton, Wendy Neal and Dacy Ivy.
The following teachers have been hired for the 2013-2014 school year. They are Edward Wilbanks, Matthew Patterson, Todd Durham, Jamie Durham, Valerie Dubose, Teresa Gold-Carter, Jordan Innerarity, Rose Riley, Morgan Harpole, Jay Hines and Dwayne Davis.
The Board of Trustees also authorized the District to enter into negotiations to purchase property located near the west end of Bruce Field.
Randy Jones said the transaction ends negotiations that began years ago.
“It’s basically just going to square up basic property we own near the field,” Jones said. “Several years ago, discussions were held when we were doing the parking lot at that time with the homeowner, and he turned it down.”
The property on the Owens Street side of the parking lot for the field is located at 412 Royal St. The ceiling price, according to Jones will be up to $46,000, along with closing and other costs.
The matter was approved in executive session.
Executive session business was not reported in the Friday edition of the Athens Daily Review because the board was still convened after press time.
