Santa Claus coming

Help Center, AFD gearing up with Toy for Tots

Athens — The Henderson County Help Center would like Santa Claus to visit all children in the county.  With Christmas just over a month away, The Help Center and the Athens Fire Department are gearing up for the Christmas season.

“We want every child to enjoy the joys of Christmas,” said Leslie Saunders, Executive Director of the Help Center.

The Help Center and the Athens Fire Department have been teaming up each year to sponsor the Toys for Tots Program in the eastern part of Henderson County.  With the help from local residents and businesses, children in Athens, Brownsboro, LaPoynor and Murchison Independent School Districts will receive toys from Santa Claus.

The goal for the Toys for Tots program is to collect new, unwrapped toys for Christmas presents. The Help Center will be set up at Walmart in Athens on Friday,  Nov.  29 to collect toys. Toys can also be dropped off at the Athens Fire Department, 927 N. Palestine St. and the Help Center, 309 Royal St. Athens. For other drop-off locations, call the Help Center at 903-675-4357.

For the third year, Bacon Auto Ranch in Athens will be holding a Toys for Tots Auto Show today Saturday, Nov. 16.  Entry fee is three unwrapped toys.  Trophies will be awarded for Best Bike, Best In Show, People's Choice, Best Project, Bacon's Best, Best Interior, Best Paint, Best Engine, Foreign Favorite and Top 20. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

The Help Center  will accept toy donations, monetary donations and volunteer assistance.

Once again, two days have been set aside to screen applicants for the Toys for Tots program.

The Help Center, along with the Athens Fire Department, will be screening for Toys for Tots on Tuesday, Nov. 19 and Wednesday, Nov. 20. To qualify, the family must live in Athens, Brownsboro, LaPoynor or  Murchison ISDs. For more information, contact the Help Center at 903-675-4357.

Toy for Tots programs are available in the county for other school districts.
