Students win at Fort Worth show
Two Henderson County students came away with winning entries in the early days of the 2010 Fort Worth Stock Show.
Casey Pitchford, a 4-H member from Athens, exhibited a First Place Late Junior Yearling Heifer in the Santa Gertrudis Junior Heifer Show on Jan. 24. Junior show officials say there were more than 10,000 entries at this year’s show in the various divisions. which ends February 7.
Samantha Crocker, of the Eustace Future Farners if America, exhibited a First Place Late Spring Heifer Calf in the Beefmaster Junior Heifer Show on Jan. 23. The legendary Fort Worth competiton runs through Feb. 7.
“One of our Show’s main priorities is our commitment to the livestock industry and the agriculture leaders of tomorrow. Junior exhibitors learn many valuable life lessons during their years of showing livestock, which will serve them well throughout their lives,” Bradford S. Barnes, the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s executive vice president and general manager said. “We started out 114 years ago as a livestock show and our focus remains the same today.”
Winning exhibitors are awarded cash “premiums” – this year to exceed $89,985 – in addition to monies generated from the sale of animals in the show’s sale of champion steers, lambs, barrows and wether goats. Over 22,000 head of world-class livestock from across the country will be on exhibit throughout the 24-day run of the Show. Four national Shows will be hosted at the event. In addition, 17 livestock auctions will be conducted.
The Stock Show showcases the nation’s dynamic livestock industry to over 900,000 visitors mostly from the Metroplex and surrounding areas. Besides livestock, the show includes educational exhibits designed to educate visitors on the livestock industry and provides 4 acres of shopping to suit most any taste.

Collision near busy intersection
Above, first responders help a person just taken from one of the autos in a collision near the intersection of Farm-to-Market 2495 and State Highway 31. At press time, little is known about the conditions of those involved. However, the husband of one of the drivers, Lindy Hempling said his wife Dora was not seriously injured.

A Henderson County Drug Enforcement Unit investigation led to the arrest of a 26-year-old man in Athens Tuesday, for possession of crack cocaine and marijuana.

Famed Austin musician to appear on Wofford House porch
The East Texas Arboretum has scheduled a concert for Friday night on the porch of the Wofford House with Austin Musician Suzanna Choffel.
The show is scheduled for 8 p.m. A VIP party is set for 6 p.m. -

The Henderson County Commissoners Court Tuesday conducted the first of two public hearings on the tax rate in what has been a peaceful budget season.

DA McKee leaves Iraq, returns home
The last American combat troops left Iraq last Friday, 7-1/2 years after the U.S.-led invasion, and two weeks ahead of President Barack Obama's Aug. 31 deadline for withdrawal from the country.
The final troops to leave, the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, rolled in convoy across the border and into Kuwait, officially ending combat operations, which began in March, 2003.
In that group was Henderson County District Attorney Scott McKee, who left his office and family in January to serve his country with the U.S. Army National Guard. McKee arrived in Dallas at DFW Airport on Saturday just in time for his 40th birthday Sunday.

Burn ban for Henderson County now in effect
The Henderson County Commissioners Court imposed a burn ban Tuesday, at the request of Fire Marshal Darrell Furrh.
The ban took effect immediately after the vote, and will remain in place for two weeks. Furrh said he had talked with fire chiefs in the county, and was told that they had not seen a big jump in the number of severity of grass fires. - More Local News Headlines
