ATHENS —
American Revolutionary War soldiers won the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina in 1781 and the battle was a turning point for Americans in the south.
The Battle of Guilford Courthouse also turned out to be a winner for Athens Intermediate School fifth-grader Ryan Weinstein.
Weinstein entered her poster of the battle in the annual National Society Sons of the American Revolution Americanism Elementary Poster Contest, and took first place locally, first place at the state level, and third place nationally.
Weinstein is one of only two Athens students to finish as high as third nationally — joining Keaton Wieser, a fourth-grader at Athens Christian Academy, who placed third in the national competition in 2007.
On Friday morning, December 7, local SAR official Sam Whitten visited the school’s assembly to honor Weinstein and present her with her awards, which include a plaque, a ribbon and a check representing her winnings throughout the contest.
“This is a remarkable achievement when you consider that, by the time she won third place at the national level, her poster had advanced ahead of thousands of chapter-entry posters from all across the country,” Whitten said.
Whitten also pointed out that Weinstein’s older sister, Jo Jo, placed first in the chapter contest and third at the state level two years ago.
“Obviously, art talent runs in this family,” he said.
The contest is long, and although Weinstein received the award at Athens Intermediate, where she now attends classes, she actually entered the contest last year when she was attending Athens Christian Academy.
According to the SAR national website, “The aim of this contest is to stimulate interest in American History in support of the established school curriculum.”

A future investment

To make the day complete, the Athens Municipal Airport will be hosting a “Fly-in” on Saturday, June 1. According to organizer Charles Tidmore, the event will give the local community a better awareness and appreciation of the Athens Airport. -
