District Courts in Henderson County will be getting an overdue upgrade in audio-visual equipment following a vote of Commissioners Court Tuesday.
The equipment is used for court participants to be able to see and hear evidence presented in court. The old audio and visual devices have been in use so long, they are no longer dependable, County Judge Richard Sanders said. During one case, someone had to hold two wires together to get a recording to play.
Commissioners accepted a bid from Athens Audio Visual for $27,054 for the project. Of that, $10,635 will go toward improvements in Mark Calhoon’s 3rd and Carter Tarrance’s 392nd District Courts, and the remaining $5,784 for Dan Moore’s 173rd. The 3rd District and 392nd District Courts will be getting the bulk of the improvements, because the 173rd system was upgraded in 2008.
The Athens AV offer was chosen over Master AV of Longview, who turned in a bid of $34,806.95. Of that, $14,003.16 would go to the 3rd and 392nd District Courts, and $6,803.63 to the 173rd.
The IT Committee met Nov. 15 to discuss the options, and decided to present the Athens AV bid to the Commissioners for approval.
Committee Member Ken Geeslin has been on the subcommittee working on the upgrade project for about nine months. He said getting proposed prices on the equipment needed was a time-consuming process.
District Attorney Scott McKee will supply $10,000 of the cost of the project from one of the funds available to his office, leaving the county portion at just above $17,000.

County votes to sell old annex building
Henderson County officials on Tuesday narrowly approved contracting with an Athens realtor to list the old Courthouse Annex building for sale.
Steve Grant Real Estate was chosen to sell the property by a 3-to-2 vote. Precinct 3 Commissioner Ronny Lawrence and Precinct 4 Commissioner Ken Geeslin cast the dissenting votes. -

Area woman killed
A 49-year-old Mabank woman died as a result of injuries sustained when she was struck by a vehicle while walking on State Highway 198 in Payne Springs Friday night.

Lusk found guilty
A jury returned a guilty verdict on Tuesday against 36 year-old Danny Ray Lusk for sexual misconduct involving two children.
Henderson County District Attorney Scott McKee said the punishment phase of the trial which began May 14 was set to begin Tuesday in Judge Mark Calhoon’s 3rd District Court. -

Art hits the streets in Mabank
The Mabank Branch of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the fifth Mabank Festival and Art Show on Market Street in downtown Mabank this past weekend. Hundreds of people and more than 75 vendors attended the event. In addition to the artwork and other items for sale, there were food vendors and entertainment for children.
