• Enjoy a cup of coffee and a word of praise in the Upper Room, on 531 Gibson Road, every Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It is a very informal meeting.

• Mount Moriah Baptist Church, on County Road 3918, in Sandflat Community, will celebrate Family and Friend Day beginning at 3 p.m. The guest speaker will be Elder I. J. Givens, of The Living God, Seagoville. Everyone is welcome.

Friday, March 19

• First United Methodist Church, on State Highway 31, in Murchison will host the Murchison Methodist Women’s annual Spring Auction and Spaghetti Supper beginning at 6 p.m. The event will include a free dinner, a baked goods and crafts auction and door prizes. • Calvary Baptist Church, on 20211 State Highway 274, in Kemp, will hold its sixth annual Quilt Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entry fee to display a quilt is $5 per quilt. Admission to the event is $3. Quilts must be delivered to the church by March 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the church’s mission ministries. • The men of Lake Athens Baptist Church will host a Men's Prayer Breakfast in the gym at 7 a.m. This breakfast is held every third Saturday of each month. For more information call the church office at 903-675-4008.

• The music ministry of Antioch Baptist Church, on East Royall Boulevard, in Malakoff, will host a pre-anniversary musical honoring Pastor Carl and First Lady Minister Roslyn Woodard at 7 p.m. All choirs, soloists, mime teams and praise teams are asked to bring a selection.     Above, the Rev. Leon Wallace of Faith Church views the base of the steeple which was salvaged after his church was one of three in Athens which fell victim to arsonists in January. The steeple sits in front of a new church building being constructed by Cooper Plastering.  The new building is estimated to have a worth of about $500,000 when completed.

  • Beekeeper says we are reason for honeybee decline

    Honeybees bring more than just a taste of honey to the world, beekeeper Dick Counts told the Athens Rotary Club, Thursday.
    Counts is the executive director of the East Texas Beekeepers Association. He says honeybees are amazing creatures that are among the most unusual and useful of God’s creations.
