• Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to the elderly for Meals on Wheels. The local route takes about an hour to run. For more information contact Gladys Bowman at 903-675-8577.

• The Texas Game Warden Museum at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is looking for individuals interested in volunteering their time to open the museum on Saturday and Sundays to visitors. For more information call 903-670-2251.

• Caring Hearts Hospice, at 1837 West Main in Gun Barrel City, are looking for volunteers in the Athens area. For more information and to register for a training session call 903-887-4788.

• The Seven Points Volunteer Fire Department is accepting applications for volunteer firefighters. All training will be provided by the fire department or other fire service agencies at no cost to the volunteer. Applicants must be at least 18-years-old, live within two miles of the Seven Points fire district and be able to pass a drug test and background check. • The Henderson County Humane Society in Athens has grant money available for owners of dogs who need financial assistance to get their dogs spayed or neutered. The dog must weigh 40 pounds or more. For more information call Ellen at 903-570-4546.

• Workforce Solutions of East Texas, on 205 North Murchison Street, Suite 101, will host a job fair for all area job seekers from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information call Workforce Solutions at 903-677-3521.

• The Henderson County Art Society will hold its meeting East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society at 10:30 a.m. Toni Stanford will be doing a demo on setting up a still life. Visitors and new members are welcome to attend.

Wednesday, March 10

• Henderson County Retired School Personnel will meet at the First Methodist Church in Athens at 2 p.m. All retired school employees in the county are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Thursday, March 11

• The Henderson County Property Owners Association will hold its meeting at the Lakeview Lodge in Athens at 7 p.m. For more information go to www.hcpoatx.com. 

Saturday, March 13

• East Texas Genealogical Society and LDS Tyler Stake Family History Center will sponsor the 10th annual Family History Fair will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, on 1617 Shiloh Road, in Tyler. • Henderson County Senior Citizens will sponsor a dance at the Senior Citizens Building, on State Highway 31 east, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Country music will be provided by the Hwy 31 Band.

• The Athens Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at First Presbyterian Church at 4:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome to come and meet with ACA board members.

• Texas Spine & Joint Hospital will hold two free seminars at the Athens Cain Center, on 915 South Palestine Street. The Hip and Knee Seminar will begin at 10 a.m. and the Back and Neck Seminar will begin at 1 p.m. Participants will learn about the different causes of arthritis, pain, and discuss the latest non-surgical treatments, surgery and advances in physical therapy. • The Henderson County Art Club will hold its 82nd annual Spring Show and Sale at the Cain Center, on 915 South Palestine on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entry form deadline for pre-registration for fine art painters, sculptors and photographers (adult and youth) is April 9. Regular events

• The Athens Cancer Support Group and The Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Group meet together in the ETMC Conference Room every first and third Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. All cancer patients, survivors and family members are encouraged to attend.

• The Workforce Solutions East Texas Job Club meets each Tuesday, at 205 North Murchison Street, Suite 101 in Athens, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. It helps job seekers with various aspects of conducting job searches, interviewing techniques, resume writing and current job trends.

• The Athens Lions Club meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Meetings are at the Tilo’s Cuisine in Heritage Square at 12 p.m. For more information call 903-477-0301.

• Caring Hearts Hospice, of Gun Barrel City, would like to invite you to a Grief Support Group for those that are struggling with the death of a loved one, friend, or family member. We will be meeting on the 3rd Thursday night of each month at 6:30, at the Caring Hearts Office located at 1837 W. Main in Gun Barrel City. There is no cost for these meetings. • The College Street Market will be held every second Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 2101 E. College St. Handmade crafts, collectibles and services are all offered. • Athens Genealogical Organization meets at 6 p.m., the last Thursday of the month, January through October, at the First Methodist Church on Lovers Lane in Athens.

• Poynor Civic Center’s First Thursday concert features live country music on the first Thursday of the month. The admission is free. Frankston Healthcare Center serves food beginning at 6 p.m. Anyone who wishes may bring a dessert. Donations for food benefit the center’s residents. Music is from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., featuring The Country Gents and guests. Dancing space is provided and every night is open mic night.     Above, the Rev. Leon Wallace of Faith Church views the base of the steeple which was salvaged after his church was one of three in Athens which fell victim to arsonists in January. The steeple sits in front of a new church building being constructed by Cooper Plastering.  The new building is estimated to have a worth of about $500,000 when completed.

  • Beekeeper says we are reason for honeybee decline

    Honeybees bring more than just a taste of honey to the world, beekeeper Dick Counts told the Athens Rotary Club, Thursday.
    Counts is the executive director of the East Texas Beekeepers Association. He says honeybees are amazing creatures that are among the most unusual and useful of God’s creations.
