Athens students work elections
Athens — Henderson County Elections Administrator Denise Hernandez had praise for the high school seniors who worked the polls on Tuesday.
The 2010 primary was the first time that the legislature has allowed high school students 16-years-of-age and older to work elections. The students were allowed to work the polls even though they won’t be eligible to vote until they are eighteen years of age
Hernandez worked with high schools across the county to train more than 50 students to work in the primary election. There was also one home schooled senior involved. One of the election night judges said the students were completely devoted to their tasks.
“This was a first hand introduction to the voting process for all of them and their hard work was evident,” Hernandez said.
