Child charged for Crescent Heights fire

Three firefighters, two others inside the residence injured by blaze allegedly set by 12-year-old girl

Athens — A juvenile has been charged with a felony for setting the fire that destroyed a mobile home in Crescent Heights on Wednesday.

Henderson County Fire Marshal Shane Renberg said the 12-year-old girl was detained and taken to the juvenile detention center in Palestine. She is being charged with arson of a habitation with injury, which is a first-degree felony offense.

Renberg said he was called to the fire scene at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, about an hour after firefighters were summoned to fight the blaze. By then the fire had fully engulfed the, single-wide dwelling in the Crescent Heights mobile home park on State Highway 31.

Renberg said his investigation determined an area of origin for the fire, but could not elaborate on how the fire was set, because of the pending case against the girl, whose name was not released because of her juvenile status.

According to reports, three firefighters and two people who had been inside the residence required medical attention due to the heat and smoke. One firefighter and a resident of the house were transported to the hospital where they were treated and released.

The fire call came in to Henderson County 9-1-1 at about 2 p.m. The Malakoff, Southside, Trinidad and North 19 Fire Departments were sent to the scene of the extremely hot fire that created clouds of black smoke about 25 feet high.

North 19 Fire Chief Bob Morris said the clothing in the house and other materials created an extremely hot fire.  The heat from the fire and the July afternoon made it a tough job for firefighters and caused three to need medical attention.
