Athens — Modest gains in February kept Athens ahead of the 2013 pace for sales-tax allocations, according to information from the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

Athens check for February is $546,992.61, a 3.18-percent improvement over last year. The year-to-date allocations put Athens 6.24-percent ahead of 2013 for the first two months of the 2014.

Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems and special-purpose taxing districts their February local sales-tax allocations totaling $802.1 million, up 8.2 percent compared to February 2013. Sales tax revenue for January indicate another strong month may be looming in March.

Combs said today that state sales-tax revenue in January was $2.3 billion, up 8.3 percent, compared to January 2013.

“Increases were seen across all major sectors of the Texas economy,” Combs said. “This indicates continued expansion in both consumer and business spending, and brings the growth in fiscal year-to-date collections to 4.6 percent, compared with the previous year. Sales tax revenue has increased for 46 consecutive months.”

Chandler had a $61,817.75 allocation in February.  The 32.64-percent increase over 2013 was driven by an increase in sales tax. It’s Chandler’s largest February allocation ever recorded, far outpacing the $48,367 in 2008.

February was sluggish for Gun Barrel City. The county’s second-largest municipality saw a decrease of about 400 from 2013.  The city is now .44 percent ahead of 2013 for the year.

The sales-tax figures represent December sales reported by monthly tax filers, as well as October, November and December sales by businesses that report tax quarterly.
