Celebrating family values

Second annual Father-Daughter Dance at Cain Center Saturday, February 13

Athens — Athens Christian Prep School is preparing for its second annual Father-Daughter Dance at the Cain Center Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The theme this year is “Winter Wonderland.” Daddy will be escorting his young daughter into a room filled with snow flakes and hearts; white trees and white lights.

Daughters will be decorated in their best Sunday dresses with corsages purchased for them by dad, who will be decked out in his own best Sunday-go-to-meeting suit, as well.

He and his daughter will be dancing to music like “Beauty and the Beast,” said ACPS Head Mistress  Teresa DeMay.

She also said she would love to see as many as 300, even 350, show up for the annual dance.

“It’s for any young lady from three to 12, who is accompanied by any father, uncle, family friend or step-parent,” said DeMay.

Admission is $20 per couple, and $5 for each extra child. The admission price will get you light refreshments, sodas and desserts, DeMay said.

Children from Athens and surrounding communities are all invited, and Demay said if your child doesn’t fit in perfectly with the age parameters, to go ahead an bring her, anyway. They won’t be turning anybody away.

“We were looking for something we could do in the community that would celebrate family values, and this was an idea we knew had been tried at other places with great success,” DeMay said. “So we wanted to give it a try. We’re very pleased with the attendance.”

The first father-daughter dance sponsored by ACPS, a school for ninth grade through 12th grade, will hold a short dancing lesson on waltzes, and the high school kids will serve as helpers, servers and for giving dance relief for tiring dads. Others will be  serving as disc jockeys, and playing the music for the couples on the dance floor.

“A lot of times it’ll be a daddy holding his little girl in his arms and dancing around the floor,” DeMay said. “Some will be wearing their party dresses and little tiaras and wrist corsages. 

“It’s a really special time for the daddy-daughter relationship.”

The theme of last year’s dance, which was held at the Lakewood Lodge, was “Enchanted Forest,” and that one attracted about 200 people.

DeMay said that was a good start, but she hopes they can do much better on the Cain Center’s gym floor this week.

  • City hears presentation for new apartment complex

    The Athens City Council heard a presentation, Wednesday, from a group that hopes to obtain a grant to build an apartment complex in south Athens.
    Jay Oji, of Sphinx Development Corporation, said the 80-unit complex called Robbins Villas would be built on a tract of land where Robbins Road intersects with Loop 7. The affordable housing units would cost about $12 million to construct.

    A former Athens High School student Bryan Sory is now flying FA-18C Hornets, the U.S. Navy’s frontline fighter plane.  Lt. Commander Sory flies for VFA-151, The Vigilantes, based in Lemoore, Calif.  VFA-151 deployed aboard the U.S.S. Lincoln in December, 2011, and is currently flying missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the overarching operation that encompasses, among other things, ongoing counter-terrorism and nation-building efforts in Afghanistan.
