ATHENS —
The Athens Police Department is investigating a theft at Prengler Iron and Metal in which a large amount of copper was taken and large machines were damaged.
A Prengler employee told police on Friday afternoon that an unknown person or persons had entered the business on West U.S. Highway 175 and removed copper from several locations. Sergeant Eddie Smith was dispatched to the business and reported that wire was stripped from a can crusher and a baler used to bundle the cans that had been run through the device.
A wire stripper was also damaged and an outside air conditioner and additional copper wiring located in a building on the property were removed. The total loss at the latest theft at business is estimated at several thousand dollars.
Lt. Michael Davis said there are no known suspects at this time, The case has been turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division.
Prengler has been a target for thieves on multiple occasions, Davis said. In June 2012, two men were arrested attempting to steal metal from the business and in March 2011 police nabbed a man and a woman in a theft attempt.

Athens house burned
A Monday afternoon fire inflicted severe damage to a house at 911 W. Cayuga Dr. in Athens.
No one was injured in the blaze that started in the back bedroom of the residence. Athens Fire Chief John McQueary said the resident had been staying with her sister and was not at home at the time of the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation. -

Time to have a blast
