Athens —
The City of Athens continued its strong start in 2013 sales-tax allocations in February with a double-digit increase over the previous year.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs’ office will send Athens a $530,131.67 check for February, up from $479,803.42 in 2012. To date, Athens is 9.09 percent above 2012 for the year-to-date.
Statewide, Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems and special-purpose taxing districts tax allocations totaling $741 million, up 4.6 percent from February, 2012. The allocations reflect a trend of strong sales-tax receipts in the state.
“Growth in sales-tax receipts was led by the construction, retail trade and restaurant sectors,” Combs said. “State sales-tax revenue has now increased for 34 consecutive months."
Henderson County’s second largest municipality, Gun Barrel City, also had a strong February. The city is receiving a $306,735.77 allocation, representing a 4.62-percent jump from 2012. Eleven of Henderson County’s 16 municipalities showed gains in February.
The sales-tax figures represent December sales reported by monthly tax filers, as well as sales by businesses that report taxes on a quarterly or annual basis.
