The Athens Review
Preparation for election day was a main topic of discussion at the Athens City Council special session on Wednesday.
No action was taken as the council covered several items likely to be on the agenda for the regular council meeting scheduled for Monday. The council discussed the resolution ordering a general election for May 11 to elect a mayor and city councilman Place 1.
The two positions last came up for election in 2009. That year, Randy Daniel was elected mayor and current Mayor Jerry Don Vaught won the Place 1 seat.
The city again will contract with Henderson County Election Administrator Denise Hernandez to conduct the elections. An interlocal agreement between Athens and the county must be passed to allow the cooperative effort.
The council will also consider authorizing a joint election agreement with the Athens Independent School District. AISD must also approve the resolution allowing some of the balloting for the two entities to be conducted at the same location.
The council also discussed bids for a new pickup for use by the Athens Fire Department. A bid will be awarded at a future meeting for a 1/2 ton, crew cab, 4-door pickup which will replace the one that has been driven by the assistant fire chief for several years.
The council meets in regular session Monday at 5:30 p.m.
