United Way honors those who give

Athens — Henderson County United Way President Charlie Hueber perhaps said it best: “We’re here to celebrate.”

The celebration was the 2012-2013 Henderson County United Way Awards Luncheon, held Wednesday at the Athens Country Club.

“We live here, and we give here,” Hueber said. “Everything stays here local.”

Hueber, who is the Trinity Valley Community College Student Life/-Judicial Officer, said his conversation with a student one day perhaps sums up the simple reasons for United Way.

“The student asked me, ‘Why give?’ and I said, ‘because I can.’”

Special thanks was offered at the gathering for the work of Sarah Hueber and Marlena Taylor, who were the drive’s co-chairpersons, and also to luncheon co-chairs Pat Griggs and Deanne Robertson.

Special thanks were also given to Mary Waddell, who was responsible for much of the luncheon’s success, and who serves as executive secretary for the Henderson County United Way.

“Mary is the heart and soul of United Way,” Mr. Hueber said.

“It was a good luncheon,” Waddell said. “We try with an awards luncheon to limit it to just honoring those who have donated to United Way in our campaign.”

Waddell said the campaign actually began for the current session in September 2012. It ends in December 2013.

“We do, in August, have a Pacesetter luncheon, and invite companies that normally donate to United Way.  We give them a packet for their company, with pledge cards and information about every agency we have agreed to give money to,” she said.

Waddell said Henderson County United Way collected $169,000 last year.  This year’s goal is $175,000.

She commented that in September, the kickoff luncheon will be staged to begin donations.

The Henderson County United Way has a website:  www.unitedwayhc.org. On that website, people can donate through PayPal.
