The Fisher High Alumni Association, Inc. provided Christmas grocery boxes for 60 families on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012.
The boxes contained a turkey and trimmings, vegetables and staples to complete the preparation for a wholesome meal.
This project was initiated two years ago as a means to give back to the community. Each year the FHAA has declared it to be a success with the help of some local churches and several civic and social organizations.
The FHAA, located at 910 North Needmore Street in Athens, issued the boxes from 10 a.m. until noon with many volunteers to help with packing and distribution of the boxes.
This event was the second of two community projects since October.
On October 20, the Class of 1960 sponsored a barbecue cookout for the community. This event provided an opportunity for schoolmates to get together and reminisce about their days at Fisher High School, which was located on the same ground until 1965.
On Feb. 23, FHAA will sponsor a college-bound workshop for high school students and students who are currently enrolled in college and/or vocational school and wish to apply for financial aid.

FHAA is also conducting a membership drive for former students of Fisher High School and/or Bishop Heights Elementary School and descendants to become actively involved in keeping the legacy of the two institutions alive and providing opportunities for the youth of Athens.

The first quarterly meeting of the FHAA Board of Directors was held Jan. 12. All interested alumni are invited to attend the next meeting, March 9.

A personal story to tell
When Donna Johnson took to the podium last week at Trinity Valley Community College, it wasn’t to tell her own story.
Johnson was the featured speaker at the college’s annual GED graduation ceremony last week. The ceremony gives students who have completed the high school equivalency exam during the past year the chance to attend commencement. -
Athens house burned
A Monday afternoon fire inflicted severe damage to a house at 911 W. Cayuga Dr. in Athens.
No one was injured in the blaze that started in the back bedroom of the residence. Athens Fire Chief John McQueary said the resident had been staying with her sister and was not at home at the time of the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation. -
Radio Club plays the field

Time to have a blast
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last about one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.
The fireworks show is directed and produced by Alpha-Lee Enterprises, Inc. of Liverpool, Texas. The show is a Keep Athens Beautiful event. -

Beetle infestation in county
If you’ve noticed some big black bugs gathering outside your home or crawling along the carpet, you’re just seeing evidence of the large number of ground beetles now in East Texas.
“The ground beetles are not rare, but the population of them that we’re seeing now is uncommon,” Henderson County AgriLife Extension Agent Rick Hirsch said. “This is the heaviest population of ground beetles that I’ve seen in my 20-plus years in Henderson County.” - More Local News Headlines
