Events to honor MLK begin with parade

Athens — A trio of events planned to honor the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Henderson County will begin Saturday.

The “Dare to Share in the Dream” parade, sponsored by the Henderson County Black Rodeo Association, will begin at 10:30 a.m. Line-up will be at the parking lot of Trinity Valley Community College.

Cost for parade entrants is $20 for businesses and organizations and $15 for individuals. Entrants will be accepted Saturday morning prior to the parade.

Following the parade, a block party will be held at the Fisher High Alumni Building (910 Needmore) to judge parade entries.

Later Saturday, the Henderson County Black History Committee will host its annual Gospel Explosion beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Johnson Chapel AME Church (1403 W. Royal) in Malakoff.

On Monday, the committee will offer its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Vigil at New Hope Corinth CME Church (120 North Havana) in Malakoff.
