Athens — The Athens Independent School District has reassigned its middle school principal  and is in the process of finding a permanent replacement.

Superintendent Blake Stiles said he could not comment on the reason for the personnel change, except to say Vicki Weatherford has accepted another position within the district.

Weatherford held the position for about two years, replacing Louis DeRosa in 2011. DeRosa had been with Athens ISD 44 years when he announced his retirement.

“I met with (Weatherford) Friday morning, then met with her staff that afternoon after the board meeting,” Stiles said.

Athens High School Assistant Principal Winston McCowan has been installed as interim principal while the district decides on Weatherford’s replacement. McCowan has been employed with the district for about three years, Stiles said.

The middle school vacancy will be posted and applications accepted. Stiles said he does not know whether McCowan will seek the permanent position but he is free to do so.  Stiles did not give a timetable for the replacement process.
