ATHENS —
The Athens City Council on Monday approved a grant to the Cain Center to upgrade its audio-visual equipment.
Athens Economic Development Corporation President Brian Malone said the AEDC board voted in November to allocate $12,475 for the center to replace its old system.
Cain Center Executive Tere Lawyer said the new audio-visual equipment is needed for the multi-purpose room that houses large events at the facility.
“It’s going to make all the difference in the world in that room,” Lawyer said. “We’ve had the old equipment for years. It’s been a detriment for getting big bookings for the room.”
Lawyer said groups holding events often rented equipment rather than use the system available at the center.
“We have a screen that drops down from the ceiling to the floor and the video equipment is going to be great and allow for the newer effects,” Lawyer said.
Once purchased, the equipment should be in place in a month or so, Lawyer said.
“We hope to get it in place for the Home and Garden Show.”
In other action, the council awarded a bid to Hi-Way Equipment Company of Tyler for a backhoe to be used by the Line Maintenance Department.
Utilities Director Glen Herriage said Hi-Way’s offer of a Case 4-wheel backhoe for $72,750 was the lowest of the four bidders. All of the bids came from Tyler-based companies.
The council also appointed Steve Grant to fill a vacancy on the Airport Advisory Board.
R.W. “Dick” Dwelle , a longtime Athens resident and board member, has moved to the Dallas area.
In another action involving the airport, the council voted to allow the Airport Board to proceed with the design of a sign to be placed at the Loop 7 airport entrance. The intent is to raise awareness of the airport’s loop entrance.

A future investment
Harry and Patti Hogue present a check for $500 to go toward the Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park in Athens. The fund-raising effort is nearing the finish line for the $220,000 project, although donations are still being sought. The Splash Pad is expected to be open some time this summer.

To make the day complete, the Athens Municipal Airport will be hosting a “Fly-in” on Saturday, June 1. According to organizer Charles Tidmore, the event will give the local community a better awareness and appreciation of the Athens Airport. -
