Athens — The East Texas Arboretum hosted a My World, My Back Yard day camp for students in kindergarten through fourth grade on Wednesday afternoon.

The Arboretum Exploring Day allowed children to explore the Arboretum with former school teachers Linda Kenneaster and Kirby Thomas.

Kenneaster said the reason they put on the camp was to get children interested in the great outdoors.

She said there are many different areas that the Arboretum has for people to enjoy.

“We have the Wofford House out here, which is an old house from the 1850s and a school house and a pond, which is the Texas area,” Kenneaster said. “It has a big windmill that we can show the kids how that works. We have the dream garden that the Master Gardeners do and we have two miles of walking trails out here.”

The East Texas Arboretum host the 1-day camps for children every June and July.  The cost of the camp will be $80.

Kenneaster said they have a 4-day camp July 22-26 for kids in kindergarten through fourth grade.

“We will have an Eco Camp out here next week, which is with Keep Athens Beautiful and the Arboretum,” Kenneaster said. “Everyday will be a different day out here and it is an all-day camp.”
