Spring color

Flowers are blooming in Athens

Athens — Tulips at the East Texas Arboretum in Athens delight the eye and lift the spirit, East Texas Arboretum & Botonical Society board member Sherry Bitz said.

These tulips, pictured, reflect the generosity of Arboretum members, donors and volunteers in the profusion of color displayed.

“Thank you to the Henderson County Garden Club, Crossroads Methodist Church and the Henderson County Master Gardeners for their recent donations of funds and gardening time to make plantings like this possible,” Bitz said. “New plantings and upkeep of established gardens and structures enhance the Arboretum’s natural beauty and provide the perfect setting to highlight the distinctive character of the Henderson County Veterans Memorial Wall, the Wofford House, the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Discovery Barn.”

The East Texas Arboretum exists because of the vision, hard work and donations by local businesses, foundations and individuals.

On Saturday, May 3 the Arboretum’s Spring Gala will celebrate the season and start of another successful year with a big party and fund raiser: Beer, Brats & Bootscootin’.

“It’s an opportunity to eat, drink and be merry with all proceeds going to support the Arboretum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit,” Bitz said.

The East Texas Arboretum is located at 1601 Patterson Rd. on the north edge of Athens off Hwy 175 just inside Loop 7.
