Trinidad youth hitched to a HCLS project

Athens — TRINIDAD — This past week was spring break for a majority of Henderson County students to relax from the strain of classes.

For Trinidad senior Zack Jones, it was a week to put the final touches on three projects he has been working on for this week's Henderson County Livestock Show.

“I had to finish everything that I have to show,” Jones said. “I will be working on it quite a bit this week.  It would be pretty cool if I did good this week.”

He said having the opportunity to work on the project has given him time to work on his skills, and helps him out in other areas of class.

“It is something to pass time, and something that I can do while I am in school,” Jones said. “It is also something fun that I can do while attending classes.”

He said that instead of showing animals at this week's show, he will be competing in the project shows.

“I am to be doing the big project show, where I am working on a hay bailer,” Jones said. “Then there is the little project show, where I am working on two hitches that you can put on a truck.”

While most students are preparing to show animals during the week, Jones said he tried that in previous year's, but it was not the right fit for him.

“This is going to be my fourth-or-fifth year,” Jones said. “I showed goats for like two-or-three years, and then started working on metal and wood projects. I kind of like doing those more than showing.”

Once he finishes his senior year at Trinidad High School, he said he would take a different career path related to the oil field.

“I am probably going to go and work on my cousin's welding business, and work on the pipeline straight out of school,” he said.

He said there is one major benefit when it comes to building projects for the show, and that is why he chose the events for the show.

“I like building, and there is more money involved in the projects,” Jones said. “I want to bring in more money so that I can make myself look good, and have fun doing the show.”
