Gas station robber sought

GBC Police search for man who took money from business on SH 198

Athens — The Gun Barrel City Police Department is looking for a man who cooly walked into a gas station on State Highway 198 Sunday, and demanded all of the cash.

GBC Chief Damon Boswell said a white male entered the store at about 8 p.m. Boswell said the clerk described the robber as calm and collected, as he took the money and fled the scene.

Assistant Chief Larry Warrick said the man reportedly picked up a drink and a bag of chips, and appeared to be shopping as some customers came in.

When the customers exited the store, the man stepped behind the counter, and told the man working the register to give him what was inside. Warrick said the black semi-automatic handgun is clearly-visible in the surveillance video, but the robber did not point it at the employee.

When the clerk had given him the cash in the register tray, the thief told him to lift it up, and get the $100 bills underneath.

With cash in hand, the bandit walked out the door. Police think he left in a vehicle parked at a car-wash next door. He initially drove north in the direction of Mabank, but could have doubled back, and gone the other way, Warrick said.

GBPD is looking for clues concerning the man’s identity. He was reportedly wearing an orange cap with a Texas Longhorns logo, and either had very short hair, or his hair snuffed under the cap. He also had very little facial hair. Warrick said the bandit appeared to be from 5-feet-7-inches to 6-feet-tall.

Det. Bill Crawford is investigating the case for GBPD, Boswell said. Officer Melanie Bird took the report on the night of the robbery, while Boswell, Warrick and Investigator Monte Mansfield worked the scene.
