Athens — A 16-year-old Malakoff girl escaped serious injury when her vehicle rolled over near the Ole West Steakhouse in Athens.

Athens Police Department reports said the wreck occurred at about 2:20 p.m. when a 2008 Ford Ranger pickup was traveling on a street which was slick due to rains drenching the city.

APD Asst. Chief Rodney Williams III said the pickup was headed east toward the city limit in the 1500 block of  East  Tyler Street when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to strike a curb on the south side of the roadway.  The pickup rolled over and came to a stop in the restaurant parking lot.

“Investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed due to the road conditions,” Williams said. “We’re not saying the driver was speeding, but you need to slow when it’s raining.”

The driver, whose name was not released because she is a minor, was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Athens by EMS with minor injuries. A 15-year-old passenger was transported to EMS by private vehicle.

Williams said that other than the rollover at Ole West, the city was able to avoid any major wrecks due to the rain. A portion of Prairieville Street between Lakeside Drive and Ben Belt had to be closed due to high water.  Police also closed a portion of West Corsicana Street under the railroad bridge after  a car was flooded by high water.
