County to discuss Furrh re-appointment at next meeting Tuesday

Athens — The possible re-appointment of County Fire Marshal Darrell Furrh is on the agenda when the Henderson County Commissioners Court meets, Tuesday, at the Courthouse Annex.

Furrh has held the office since January, 2010 when he was selected to replace John Holcomb, who resigned the position to take a job with the City of Forney. The Commissioners chose Furrh from a list of applicants, partly because of his experience as a fire investigator.

Furrh’s firefighting career includes 25 years with the Garland Fire Department. During that time, he spent 10 years in the GFD Fire Marshal’s Office, determining the origin and cause of blazes, and filing criminal cases against those responsible.

He served as Captain and Assistant Chief of the Edgewood Fire Department for 10 years, and had a 2-year stint as Fire Marshal and Criminal Investigator.  Later, he held investigator positions with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kaufman Criminal District Attorney’s Office.

Also on the agenda is a switch of the county e-mail exchange server and county website host. The Internet Technology Committee is recommending the change. Information Technology Manager Josh Brock said the county has discussed moving its e-mail to Rackspace Hosting of San Antonio, while continuing to deal with Cirra for the website.

On election night, Nov. 6, the county experienced problems with making returns available to citizens via the website. Because that has been a recurring problem in three recent events, the Committee began to look into dealing directly with Rackspace.

The regular Commissioners meeting starts at 9 a.m., to be followed at 10 a.m., by a special workshop. The Commissioners will look at new regulations and other issues that will affect the 2014 budget.
