East Texas Arboretum is usually a quiet, colorful spot to take a quiet walk, and enjoy the sights, but on occasion is bustling with activity.
Arboretum President Peggy Rhodes told the Athens Rotary Tuesday that such a date is coming up Saturday, when the Fall Festival returns.
The festival features fun and games and a revival of the Black-Eyed-Pea Cookoff.
“So everyone get your black-eyed peas out, make enough to feed about 100 people, and you might win $300.” Rhodes said.
A western town with a village full of townspeople, and similated gunfighter showdowns, is part of the festivities. There’s also a dog-kissing contest, where the dogs kiss the judges, whether they like it or not.
If you haven’t been out to the Arboretum lately, Rhodes says it’s in fine form.
“Theresa (Glasgow) has done a great job with the grounds,” Rhodes said.
A member of the audience asked Rhodes about the progress of construction of a rock entrance to the Arboretum.
“We’re waiting on TxDOT,” Rhodes said. “We have all of our ducks in a row. The city has come in, and lowered the water and sewer lines that needed to be lowered. Keep Athens Beautiful has done all they need to do about OK-ing everything.”
The latest news from the Texas Department of Transportation is that the construction will begin in March of 2011.
“We’re at the mercy of the government,” Rhodes said.

Art hits the streets in Mabank
The Mabank Branch of the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the fifth Mabank Festival and Art Show on Market Street in downtown Mabank this past weekend. Hundreds of people and more than 75 vendors attended the event. In addition to the artwork and other items for sale, there were food vendors and entertainment for children.
