Athens — AUSTIN  — The City of Athens got the VIP treatment on Tuesday as “Athens Day at the Capitol” was observed in the state House and Senate.

The contingent consisted of various groups including officials with the City of Athens, the Athens Chamber of Commerce and the Athens Leadership Institute.

Resolutions were read from the House and Senate floors recognizing Tuesday, Feb. 12, as Athens Day at the Capitol.  Additionally, a special resolution was read recognizing the service of Henderson County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Randy Daniel, who recently stepped down as Athens mayor to switch to his current post. Daniel had served as Athens’ mayor since 2005.

“Through his dedication and guidance, Randy Daniel has helped to make Athens an ever better place in which to live and work,” the resolution reads in part.

The Athens group also got brief updates on several issues facing the legislature, including education, gambling and water rights, and the use of drone aircraft in Texas.
