BROWNSBORO — The occupants of a Brownsboro-area home escaped injury when fire destroyed their residence on Saturday.
Brownsboro Volunteer Fire Department Captain Russell Kuhns said five individuals, including two handicapped residents, were inside the dwelling located on County Road 3519 when the fire broke out. Family members helped them to safety just before firefighters arrived. Another of the family members is a fifth-grade girl from Brownsboro.
“They made it out with what they had on their backs,” Kuhns said. “It shows that families should always be prepared for such a situation”
The single-level house is located near the edge of the BVFD service area, Kuhns said. It took firefighters a few minutes to get there, giving the flames plenty of time to do severe damage in the three-bedroom house.
The fire probably began in the back bedroom, Kuhns said. The exact cause is hard to determine.
The home was a total loss and the family’s belongings were destroyed in the smoke and flames. The family also lost all of its prescription medications.
Opelika Baptist Church opened its fellowship hall to the family while firefighters battled the flames on the cold morning. Other organizations are pitching in to help the family with its needs.
Brownsboro VFD was assisted by departments from Murchison, Chandler and Edom. Kuhns said water had to be brought to the fire by tanker truck. The Brownsboro department has a tanker that holds 3,000 gallons of water.
Kuhns credits the Brownsboro Emergency Services District with helping the department get the equipment it needs to fight such fires.

Harry and Patti Hogue present a check for $500 to go toward the Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park in Athens. The fund-raising effort is nearing the finish line for the $220,000 project, although donations are still being sought. The Splash Pad is expected to be open some time this summer.
