Athens — The Athens Police Department is looking for a man who drove a street sweeper from the Walmart parking lot, and later fled Chandler police after he was stopped in the vehicle.

APD received a call at about 12:45 a.m., Saturday, that an unknown individual removed the 2008 model Isuzu Sweeper when an employee stepped away from the vehicle.  The truck is used to maintain the parking lot at the Walmart store on East Tyler Street.

APD dispatched Officer Justin Cook to the Walmart store, where he took a report from the sweeper driver.

“He started using his hand blower to blow leaves from under and around the vehicle in the parking lot,” Assistant Chief of Police Rodney Williams said. “When he returned, he noticed the sweeper truck was missing.”

Police looked at footage from the store surveillance camera, and saw a single white male enter the truck, and drive it out of the parking lot. The sweeper turned onto State Highway 31, and headed east. About an hour later, a Chandler police officer made a traffic stop on the sweeper.

CPD reported that when the Isuzu stopped, a white male got out of the vehicle, and ran away. Police at the scene were unable to locate the man who fled.

The case has been turned over to the APD Criminal Investigations Division.
