Henderson County United Way kicks off big fund-raising effort

Athens — The Henderson County United Way has started its fundraising campaign for the 2013-2014 year.

Mary Waddell, secretary for Henderson County United Way, said this year’s goal is $180,000.

The Henderson County United Way works with top businesses in the community. This group of businesses is called the United Way Pacesetters. 

As a participant of the Pacesetter Program, the company or employee can make a difference assisting people throughout the community.

“The Pacesetter program has proven to be a driving force behind our United Way fundraising efforts,” Waddell said.

Non-profit organizations  in Henderson County admit they could not accomplish what they do without the help from United Way.

The Henderson County agencies for the United Way supports are American Red Cross, Boy Scouts Troop 11, Athens Cain Center, CASA, Cedar Creek Library, Child Advocacy Center, Disciples Clinic of Athens, East Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, East Texas Crisis Center, Family Peace Project, Family Resource Center, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, Henderson County 4-H, Henderson County Teen Court, Labor of Love, Meals on Wheels, New Beginnings/After Baby Comes, Salvation Army, Athens Branch United Way Children's Emergency Fund/Assistance for the Elderly and the United Way Help Line.

The United Way has made contributing an easy task. The United Way not only accepts payroll deduction contributions, it also accepts donations though its website at There is a Paypal account on the website that will accept a one-time donation or a continuous donation. Donations can also be mailed to United Way Henderson County, P.O. Box 1435, Athens, TX 75751. 

Waddell explains the different levels of donation available. Those levels include: Flagship Award that will be given for a $2,500 donation; Leadership Award for $1,000;  or Citizens Award for $500.

“There is also a Gold Award for the companies who have 100-percent participation from employees,” Waddell.

The United Way Fundraising Drive runs from Sept. 1 through the end of October.

“The money raised in Henderson County stays in Henderson County,” Waddell said. “We appreciate any and all  donations.”
