Friday, Feb. 5

• Lake Athens Baptist Church, on Farm-to-Market Road 2495, will host its monthly Game Day beginning at 3 p.m. The event will include games and refreshments. For more information call 903-675-4008.

Sunday, Feb. 7

• First Baptist Church, Malakoff will host the Henderson County Black History Committee “We Love our Youth” at 3 p.m. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Fredrick V. Moss, of Allen Chapel AME Church. Participants are asked to bring a can food item to help the food pantries in Athens and Malakoff.

• The Athens Church of God, on 599 Robbins Road, will host gospel singers Jubil Heirs in concert from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be served. For more information call Pastor Henry Lusk at 903-477-2599.

Sunday-Wednesday, Feb. 7-10

• Opelika Missionary Baptist Church, on County Road 3520, in Brownsboro, will host a revival with Bro. Jim Moss, of the Love Worth Sharing Ministries speaking. Friday, Feb. 19

• Knights of Columbus, Mary Queen of Heaven Council will host an all-you-can-eat fish fry with all the fixings in the Mary Queen of Heaven Parish Hall from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will benefit scholarship funds and local charities. Cost is $7 per adult, $5 for children from seven to 12 and free for children under six. Tickets may be purchased from a Knight at the door.

Sunday, Feb. 21

• Trinity Valley Community College, on 100 Cardinal Drive, and the Combined Community Effort Committee will host the Celebration of Gospel 2010 at 4 p.m. Admission is free but a love offering will be accepted. • Lake Athens Baptist Church, on Farm-to-Market Road 2495, will host a revival with Dr. Richard Owen Roberts on Sunday at 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m., and daily at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. A meal will be provided at the noon service.

Sunday-Wednesday, Feb. 21-24

• First Baptist Church of Malakoff, on 220 West Mitcham, will host Radiate 2010 on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on weeknights at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Ronnie Hill — founder of threeminutestory.com – and worship will be led by Stacy Perkins. • Lake Athens Baptist Church, on Farm-to-Market Road 2495, will host a ladies Bible study each Monday at 9:30 a.m. The month of January begins the study of the book of Esther by Beth Moore. For more information call the church office at 903-675-4008.

• Lake Athens Baptist Church provides a unique opportunity for children to learn to sign and play bells each Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. This special time is available for children ages four through sixth grade.

• The Sewing Ladies of Lake Athens Baptist Church will meet in the fellowship hall to sew items for local nursing homes each Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to participate. For more information call the church office at 903-675-4008.

• Every Tuesday is a special day at South Place Nursing Home. Ladies from Lake Athens Baptist Church treat the residents to manicures.

• West Place Nursing Home has a birthday party for all residents who have a birthday during the month, on the third Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. Lake Athens Baptist Church is pleased to play host to the party and would like to invite all who are interested in making a  difference in the lives of our senior citizens to participate.

• Hope Community Church of Murchison holds a Backyard Bible Club the first Sunday of each month at the Murchison Baseball Field at 4 p.m. This free event includes games, food, puppets and skits.

• Christian Women's Ministry of the First Christian Church, on 900 Robbins Road, meets the first Wednesday of each month at 11:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall.   • Fair Park sound system gets AEDC boost

    The Athens Economic Corporation Board took formal action Thursday morning that should result in a stipend of up to $35,000   to match a Ginger Murchison Foundation matching grant for helping finance the Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex new sound equipment.

    Once again Athens will be seeing these Scouts Saturday as they knock on doors to collect food in BSA’s National Scouting for Food Drive. Shown are Tiger Cub Hunter Kaufman and Eagle Scout Michael McCluskey. Also shown is Sierra Kaufman, one of several American Heritage Girls who will be joining the boys in their efforts to collect food.  In the past few years, despite the economy, over 1,000 cans each year have been collected and donated to Henderson County’s Food Pantry.  So when you see these boys and girls in uniform this weekend, open your hearts and help feed the hungry in Henderson County.

  • Churches to join with community at Cain Center

    Churches from across Henderson County will come together on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Cain Center in Athens to provide services to all members of the Henderson County community. 
    “This all grew out of the community coming together during the nativity scene controversy in December,” said the Rev. Eric Graham from Sands Springs Baptist Church.

  • Downed airplane located

    The Henderson County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Public Safety Game Wardens assisted in locating an plane that went down in Lake Palestine early Thursday. The Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.

  • City hears presentation for new apartment complex

    The Athens City Council heard a presentation, Wednesday, from a group that hopes to obtain a grant to build an apartment complex in south Athens.
    Jay Oji, of Sphinx Development Corporation, said the 80-unit complex called Robbins Villas would be built on a tract of land where Robbins Road intersects with Loop 7. The affordable housing units would cost about $12 million to construct.

    A former Athens High School student Bryan Sory is now flying FA-18C Hornets, the U.S. Navy’s frontline fighter plane.  Lt. Commander Sory flies for VFA-151, The Vigilantes, based in Lemoore, Calif.  VFA-151 deployed aboard the U.S.S. Lincoln in December, 2011, and is currently flying missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the overarching operation that encompasses, among other things, ongoing counter-terrorism and nation-building efforts in Afghanistan.
