The Athens Review
Athens — Splash, splash, splash went the hoofbeats as New Hampshire native Bob Skelding’s horse-drawn wagon rolled through Henderson County Monday.
Despite pouring rain and temperatures in the upper 40s, Skelding steadily progressed along State Highway 31 to Malakoff, near the western edge of the county.
He’s bound for Austin. Then when things get a little warmer, he’ll set his course across the Continental Divide. From there he’ll head north, up the west side of the Rocky Mountains, before returning to Indiana.
His team covers it at a pace of about 15 to 25 miles per day. So far, Skelding is a little more than 1,000 miles into his journey.
“I’m doing it just for the fun of it, Skelding said.
Skelding spent Sunday night at the Henderson County Fair Park Coliseum, then woke up and set out for Athens.
By late morning, the team swung through the courthouse square.
He quit his job a couple of years ago to get away from the day-to-day schedule. Now he kind of makes things up as he goes. He finds that the people he meets along the way are mostly friendly and helpful.
“You just take your chances,” Skelding said.
