Athens — A 52-year-old man died in a mid-day fire at his Payne Springs residence Thursday, Henderson County Fire Marshal Darrell Furrh said.

Payne Springs Fire Department personnel responded to a call of a fire at a manufactured home on 6594 Cedar View Street. Responders found the body of Lowell Neil Loden inside the 1,200-square-foot structure.

After controlling the fire, and because a body was found in the structure, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and Furrh were called to investigate.

“There was a fire fatality,” Furrh said. “They did an autopsy on him this morning. They’re still doing a preliminary investigation into evidence we took at the scene. Basically that’s all I want to release at this time.”

County Sheriff Ray Nutt said his office responds to various types of deaths in the county. He said preliminary information indicated that the death was caused by the fire.
