CRISD locked down temporarily

Athens — The Cross Roads Independent School District campus was on lock down for a short time, Tuesday morning while the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office handled a potentially-dangerous situation.

The lockdown occured after the school day was underway, and lifted by mid-day.

Sheriff Ray Nutt said the schools were never in any danger, but took the necessary action to be cautious.

The incident that led to the lock down was a call to HCSO reporting a “possibly suicidal subject” on County Road 1315.

The location was about three or four miles from the school, Nutt said.

The HCSO was told that a man at the residence had a weapon and a shot may have been fired. HCSO personel went to the residence and made contact with the man.

Nutt said he didn’t think the individual was suicidal, but had been angry at a family member. After the HCSO talked to the man, he calmed down, Nutt said.

No one was injured in the incident.

It would be hard for anyone under the age of 50 to imagine East Texas without the abundance of lakes in the region, providing water and sources of recreation.
Many of the reservoirs in East Texas today, were created in the years immediately following the dusty, dry, decade of the 50s, when drought conditions left Texas parched for water. The rainfall all but stopped at the beginning of the decade and by 1957, 244 of the state’s 254 counties, including Henderson County, had been declared Federal Disaster Areas for lack of rainfall.
