Payne Springs Police Chief Matthew Kenneth Edmonds and another motorist escaped serious injury on Thursday afternoon when they left the roadway in a crash on State Highway 198.
Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper James Martin said the wreck occurred at the intersection of County Road 2529, when Edmonds attempted to make a right turn in his 2007 Dodge Charger patrol car.
The second vehicle, a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Garland Dean Moser, 75, of Irving, also traveling north on SH 198, was not far behind Edmonds
Martin said when Edmonds stopped to turn, Moser attempted to avoid running into the patrol car and steered to the right. The front left of the pickup struck the right side of the patrol car, and the two vehicles traveled off the roadway.
Edmonds was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Gun Barrel City with non-incapacitating injuries. Moser was not injured in the crash.
Departments paged to the wreck included the DPS, Payne Springs Police Department, Caney City Police Department and Eustace Police Department.
